China Successfully Tests First 100kg Liquid Hydrogen Truck System, Enabling 1,000+ km Range Without Stopping

China has achieved a significant milestone in hydrogen-powered transportation with the successful testing of the country’s first 100kg liquid hydrogen (LH₂) fuel system for heavy-duty trucks. This breakthrough, conducted by CIMC Enric and partners, enables trucks to travel more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) without refueling, marking a major step forward in decarbonizing long-haul freight transport.

Key Highlights of the Test

1. Record-Breaking Range – The liquid hydrogen system allows trucks to surpass 1,000 km on a single fill, far exceeding the range of most diesel and battery-electric trucks.

2. High Efficiency & Capacity – The 100kg LH₂ storage system was tested under real-world conditions, demonstrating reliability in extreme temperatures and varying road conditions.

3. Partnerships & Innovation – The project involved collaboration between CIMC Enric (a hydrogen equipment maker), Beiqi Foton Motor (a truck manufacturer), and the Beijing Tianhai Industry Company (a hydrogen storage specialist)

Why Liquid Hydrogen?

Higher Energy Density: Liquid hydrogen stores more energy than compressed gas, enabling longer ranges.

Reduced Refueling Frequency: Fewer stops mean higher efficiency for logistics operators.

Lower Carbon Footprint: When produced using renewable energy, hydrogen trucks emit only water vapor.

Challenges & Future Outlook

Infrastructure Needs: Widespread adoption requires more LH₂ refueling stations.

Cost Reduction: Liquid hydrogen production and storage remain expensive but are expected to become cheaper with scaling.

Government Support: China is aggressively investing in hydrogen as part of its carbon neutrality goals, with policies favouring fuel-cell vehicles.

Conclusion

This successful test positions China as a leader in liquid hydrogen truck technology, offering a viable zero-emission solution for long-haul transport. As infrastructure improves, LH₂-powered trucks could revolutionize freight logistics globally.
